Gopher football quarterback Tony Mortensen was born on August 28, 1985 in Hutchinson, Minnesota. He played high school football under the leadership of Andy Rostberg at Hutchinson High School in Minnesota where he led the team to back-to-back state championship games. In his high school career Mortensen completed 140 of 250 passes for 2,700 yards and 30 touchdowns in his career and also ran for 1,500 career yards and 18 scores. In addition to being a football star, Mortensen was an all around super star athlete lettering in three times in basketball, twice in baseball and once in track. He was named a three-time all-conference selection in football and threw for 900 yards his senior season with nine touchdowns and a 60 percent completion percentage.
With the University of Minnesota, Tony Mortensen was a redshirt freshman in 2004 starting his college Gopher football career in 2005. As a freshman, Mortensen appeared in six games and started one against the Wisconsin Badgers due to an injury to then starting quarterback Bryan Cupito. Against the Badgers, Mortensen set career-highs, throwing for 99 yards on 7 of 17 passing and one touchdown. Mortensen connected with Matt Spaeth on a five-yard scoring strike in second quarter against the Badgers for his first career passing touchdown. Mortensen saw action in 135 plays his freshman season and earned his first letter.
As a University of Minnesota sophomore, Tony Mortensen played fewer plays than his freshman season, but still put on a good show as the back-up Gopher quarterback. Mortensen appeared in three games where he tallied two rushing attempts for 10 yards in the season opener at Kent State and rushed two times for six yards and scored his first career rushing touchdown against Temple. Mortensen participated in 47 plays in his sophomore year with the Golden Gophers and earned his second letter.
In 2007, Mortenson earned his third letter from the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team. He played in one game as a reserve quarterback and completed three of four passes.
As a back-up quarterback for the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Football team, Tony Mortensen can be counted on when needed.
