Gopher Steve Davis was born January 15, 1987 to Gail and Steven Davis in St Louis, Missouri. He played high school football for McCluer North High School, Missouri, under the direction of Coach Jim Schottmueller. In high school, Davis was ranked as the 47th-best outside linebacker in the country and the second-best overall linebacker in Missouri by Rivals. He was named first-team all-state by the St. Louis Post Dispatch his junior and senior seasons and was also a two-time all-city and all-conference selection. Davis made 123 tackles, 12 sacks, eight tackles-for-loss and three forced fumbles in just one season.
Steve Davis choose to attend the University of Minnesota and appeared in 11 of 12 Gopher football games as a true freshman with 10 starts. He finished the Gopher football season with 37 tackles, nine tackles-for-loss, six quarterback sacks and a pass breakup. Davis six sacks were the most on the Gopher football team and ninth most in the Big Ten. He was named to the Sporting News Big Ten All-Freshman Team and was named to the College Football News Freshman All-America Team. His best game was probably against Purdue when he made a career-high five tackles including one sack for a loss of 11 yards. He only missed one Gopher football game during his freshman season due to injury and even played in the Music City Bowl against Virginia where he posted three tackles. As a freshman, Steve Davis participated in 555 plays and earned a letter.
In 2006, as a Gopher football sophomore Steve Davis started all 13 games, tallying 48 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, 4.5 sacks, two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. His favorite game was the game against number one ranked Ohio State where Davis made three tackles , one sack and also forced the first fumble of his career against the Buckeyes. Davis also performed extremely well in the game against Michigan State where he made three tackles and gave the Gophers the lead with his 48-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the second quarter against the Spartans. It was the first fumble recovery of his career and he says he will keep the game ball forever. As a sophomore, Steve Davis participated in 897 plays was an Academic All-Big Ten selection, a scholar-athlete award winner and earned his second letter.
In his 2007 Gopher football junior season, Steve Davis played in 11 of 12 games and made 8 starts as strong linebacker. In this position, Davis had a career-best 54 tackles, 29 of which were solo stops. He was an Academic All-Big Ten, earned a third letter, and was a scholar-athlete winner.
Steve Davis is majoring in Journalism at the University of Minnesota and he will have plenty to write about when it comes to his career as a Golden Gopher. Head coach Tim Brewster expects more great plays from this experienced defensive player. Davis made the switch from defensive end and jersey number 92 to linebacker and jersey number 56 during the offseason and the Golden Gophers are excited to once again have him on the team.
Steve Davis made his mark on the Gopher football team before transferring to the University of Wisconsin in 2008.\
