Marcus Sherels was successful in football and basketball throughout high school. He was in the top 50 football prospects in the state by MinnesotaPreps.com. Marcus Sherels was also an honorable mention at the all-state selection for running back. Additionally, Marcus Sherels was an all-conference selection in basketball.

Marcus Sherels' was a walk-on for his 2006 Gophers football freshman season, and ended up playing in 7 games, earning his first letter.

During his 2007 sophomore season with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team, Sherels played in 9 games. He caught 3 passes for 46 yards and a touchdown. On special teams, Sherels collected 9 solo tackles for Gophers football. He also had a punt return for 7 yards.
