Lamonte Edwards was born on September 9, 1991 in Woodbury, Minnesota.

Attending Woodbury High School, Lamonte Edwards helped lead his Royals team to a 6-4 record in 2009 and earned second-team all-state honors from the Associated Press. He rushed for 1,053 yards as a senior, despite playing only seven games, while scoring 13 rushing touchdowns in 2009. Lamonte Edwards also played defensive back, recording 45 tackles and forcing four fumbles last season.

Lamonte Edwards was ranked as the No. 23 outside linebacker in the nation by national recruiting expert Tom Lemming and the No. 88 running back in the nation, according to ESPN and Scouts, Inc. Projected as a running back at Minnesota, Lamonte Edwards selected Minnesota over offers from Iowa, UAB and Wisconsin. In 2010, it will be Lamonte Edward's first season at Minnesota. Edwards redshirted during the 2010 season.
