Kenny Watkins was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 12, 1990. After relocating to Chicago, Kenny Watkins attended Brother Rice High School and enrolled in their football program. As a freshman he helped lead his school to the state championship. That season, they recorded a 12-1 record with Kenny Watkins as a regular fixture as a defensive back. He also tallied over 60 tackles including 50 solo stops as a senior as well as earning all-area honors. After offers from Bowling Green and Central Michigan came in, Kenny Watkins chose to play at the University of Minnesota.

Kenny Watkins was ranked the number 42 safety in the country by ESPN.com. 2010 will be Kenny Watkins redshirt freshman season at Minnesota. In 2010, he played in three games and made five tackles while embracing his role as a reserve.
