Joel Monroe was born on July 27, 1986 and is a 2004 graduate of Robbinsdale-Cooper High School in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
Monroe had an impressive high school career both in athletics and academics. He was the 2004 Minnesota all-state and all-conference selection at kicker. He was also a pitcher and outfielder in baseball. Monroe was the valedictorian of his graduating class and won the U.S. Army National Scholar-Athlete Award.
After redshirting his 2004 season with the Gophers football team, Monroe appeared in 4 games and scored 12 points in 2005. He also earned his first letter.
Joel Monroe's 2006 season with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team was important. He had a 62.0-yard average on 69 kicks. He participated in 18 plays and earned a second letter with the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher football team.
By the time 2007 rolled around, Joel Monroe participated in all 12 games of the Gophers football season. He ranked 2nd in the Big Ten in both kickoff distance and net average. Monroe earned his 3rd letter with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team and was a scholar-athlete award winner.
It is estimated that Joel Monroe could be a contender for the Lou Groza Award in 2008. Monroe is majoring in chemical engineering at the University of Minnesota.
The former kicker graduated in 2009 with a degree in chemical engineering.
