Jimmy Gjere was born on January 16, 1992 in New Brighton, Minnesota.

Attending Irondale High School in Minnesota, Jimmy Gjere had an outstanding career. As a top recruit, he was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Game. He helped his team advance to the second round of the state playoffs and was a first-team Associated Press All-State selection. In addition he was a two-time All-North Suburban Conference selection and was honored as the North Suburban Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2008 and 2009. A two-time All-Metro selection and second-team all-state as a junior in 2008.

Jimmy Gjere selected Minnesota over offers from Wisconsin, Iowa, Stanford and Tennessee. He was ranked as the No. 17 offensive tackle in the nation by Rivals.com, the No. 161 player in the nation, and the No. 2 player in Minnesota by Rivals. He had enormous potential and is one the the top recruits the Minnesota Gophers have landed in recent seasons. He is expected to be a key contributor.
