Team Member Information
Jay Thomas was born on June 29, 1987 and graduated from Sophmore from Tartan High in Oakdale, Minnesota. As a local Minnesota high school athlete, Jay Thomas was a stand-out in both football and track. In football, Thomas was marked as the 18th-best all-purpose back in the country by Rivals. The St. Paul Pioneer Press named Jay Thomas as the 2004 Football Player of the year. He was also named to the KARE-11 and Star Tribune All-Metro teams his senior season. Thomas closed out his high school career by setting school records for career rushing yards, career kickoff returns for touchdowns, and rushing touchdowns in a season and a game. In track, Thomas finished third in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash at the state meet.
Jay Thomas redshirted in 2005 with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team.
In 2006, Thomas participated in 12 of 13 Gophers football games, in which he rushed 37 times for four touchdowns.
Thomas' 2007 University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football season began with the momentum of 2006. He played in eight Gophers football games before suffering a season-ending knee injury in a game against the North Dakota State Bison.
Coach Tim Brewster hopes to have Jay Thomas back for the 2008 University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team, healthy and ready for play.
