J.D. Pride was born on September 19, 1991 in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
As a senior at Totino-Grace High School, J.D. Pride led his team to a 13-0 record and a Class 4A State Championship in 2009. He threw for 1,055 yards, 10 touchdowns, and just six interceptions in 2009. He also added 76 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
J.D. Pride chose Minnesota over interest from North Carolina, South Carolina, UCLA and Wisconsin. He was ranked as the No. 243 athlete in the nation by ESPN.
Pride redshirted during the 2010 season.
