Herschel Thornton was born on November 9, 1987 in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

After attending Sherman E. Burroughs High School, Herschel Thornton attended Lackawanna Junior College. He lead his team to a 5-4 overall record and a 3-2 mark in the Northeast Football Conference in 2009. In 2009, he earned second-team National Junior College Athletic Association All-America status and was named first-team All-Northeast Conference. Herschel Thornton earned his team's Defensive Player of the Year award and recorded 49 total tackles to rank second on the team.

In 2010, Herschel Thornton will be a junior after transferring.
