Ernie Wheelwright was born on July 10, 1984 in Columbus, Ohio. He played high school football at Walnut Ridge High School (Ohio) before graduating and joining the University of Minnesota Gopher football team in 2003 when he redshirted.
Ernie Wheelwright has been a starter in 32 of 37 games he has played at the University of Minnesota. The imposing wide receiver has career totals of 93 catches for 1,659 yards and is ranked seventh in school history in career receiving yards. Wheelwright’s junior season saw him catch 26 balls for 437 yards, as the receiver caught touchdown passes in each of his final four games. In his sophomore year, Wheelwright finished the season as the team’s leading receiver with 568 yards. His freshman year saw him win national awards, including a second team selection on Rivals Freshman All-America team and an honorable mention All-Big Ten honor by the media. He finished the season with astounding numbers for a freshman: 30 catches, 654 yards and seven touchdowns.
In high school, Ernie Wheelwright had superb junior and senior campaigns, gaining all-conference, all-area and all-state honors. His senior year saw the explosive Wheelwright catch 24 balls for 875 yards and 13 touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Wheelwright made 15 pass deflections, intercepted five balls and forced one fumble. As a punt returner, he took back seven punts for 215 yards and three touchdowns.
Ernie Wheelwright was also a basketball and track athlete in high school.
