Ed Cotton was born on September 27, 1989 in Champlin, Minnesota.

A 2008 graduate of Champlin Park High School, Ed Cotton played fullback for the Rebels. In his senior season, he rushed for 731 rushing yards in 129 carries with 6 touchdowns. He caught for 150 receiving yards on 17 receptions. Ed Cotton helped lead the Rebels to the AAAAA state championship game and a runner-up finish as a senior.

In 2009, Ed Cotton was redshirted and did not see any action. Cotton played sparingly in four games and received his first varsity letter.
