Duane Bennett was born on June 11, 1989 in Fairview Heights, Illinois. He played high school football at O’Fallon Township High School (Illinois) before graduating and joining the University of Minnesota Gopher football team in 2007.
Duane Bennett quickly rose to national scouting attention as he was ranked the 135th-best running back in the nation by ESPN.com as he finished his senior year with 1,362 yards and 22 touchdowns. In his high school career, the crafty Bennett finished with 443 carries for 3,419 yards and 40 scores.
Duane Bennett's 2007 freshman season with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers earned him freshman All-Big Ten honors from The Sporting News. He appeared in an impressive 10 of 12 University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football games. Duane Bennett finished the year ranked 2nd on the Gophers football team in carries and 3rd for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. In 2008, he was granted redshirt after a knee injury in second game of the year at Bowling Green. In 2009, Duane Bennett rushed for 376 yards on 98 carries, with six touchdowns. He also caught 16 passes for 194 yards and two scores. In 2010, he led the Gophers in all purpose yards with 996 yards. He had 560 rushing with three touchdowns and 336 yards receiving with 1 touchdown.
