Dominic Alford was born on February 22, 1988 in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Shaker Heights High School in Ohio before joining the University of Minnesota Gophers football team in 2006, when he redshirted.
During Dominic Alford's 2007 freshman season on the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team, he appeared in 11 of 12 games, mostly at the position of right tackle. Alford blocked for a Gophers football offensive side that passed for 2,949 yards, the second-highest total in school history. He ended the season by earning his first letter on the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team. In 2008, Dominic Alford made a successful transition from right tackle to left tackle and started the first three games of the season before suffering a severe high-ankle sprain. In 2009, Dominic Alford played in all 13 games, including nine starts.
Dominic Alford was the 2005 Lake Erie League Lineman of the Year in high school. He was also a second-team all-state selection his senior year. The burly offensive tackle also lettered in track.
Dominic Alford is a pre-liberal arts major at the University of Minnesota.
