Derrick Onwuachi was born on June 23, 1987 in Newhall, California. He played high school football at Hart High School before graduating and going to play junior college ball at College of the Canyons junior college. Onwuachi joined the University of Minnesota Gopher football team in 2007.

During Derrick Onwuachi's sophomore season on the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, he appeared in 10 games. He also made starts in five of the last six game of the year and was an Academic All Big 10 for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team.

Derrick Onwuachi redshirted under Chuck Lyons at College of the Canyons but redshirted in 2006.

In high school, Derrick Onwuachi made 60 tackles with seven sacks on his senior season, making him a sought after defensive end.
