Ben Fischer was born on August 4, 1987 in Wausau, Wisconsin. He attended Wausau East High School in Wisconsin before joining the University of Minnesota Gophers football team in 2006. Fischer redshirted in his first year.

In high school, Ben Fischer was a two-time all-state and all-area selection. He compiled 58 catches for 1,042 yards with eight touchdowns in his junior and senior year. The crafty receiver was also a three time letter winner in basketball and twice in baseball.

In a surprise move, Ben Fischer chose to attend Winona State and become a Winona Warrior Division II basketball player. This decision was influential in Winona's success in capturing the NCAA Division II championship basketball game.
