Minnesota Golden Gophers sports field on the University of Minnesota campus in downtown Minneapolis. The U of M fields men's and women's basketball, cross-country, gymnastics, golf, ice hockey, swimming, tennis, and track and field teams. Basically, the men's teams are baseball, football, hockey, and wrestling. The women's teams are basically basketball, rowing, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Even the cheerleaders, dance team and the U of M's marching band are also parts of the University's athletic department; they are present at events such as: basketball, football, hockey, and volleyball. Since 2002, Joel Maturi has been the Athletic Director.

In both men's and women's ice hockey, Minnesota Golden Gophers belong to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. In all the other sports, Minnesota Golden Gophers belong to the Big Ten Conference. The majority of the facilities that the teams use are located on the East Bank of the University's campus. The Williams Arena is used for the men's and women's basketball as well as Mariucci Arena and Ridder Arena being used for hockey. Here is one note to one exception: Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, a mile from the East Bank across Interstate 35W, is where the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team will play their home games until 2009, when the TCF Bank Stadium opens.

In 1880, the U of M was preparing for spring graduation and President Folwell began a tradition of common school colors at the U. Over the past 29 years, there were different graduation colors used at every ceremony, but this year was going to be the start of having school colors. President Folwell asked an English instructor, Mrs. Augusta Smith, to select appropriate colors to use for the graduation ribbons and other occasions. She decided on gold and maroon, which made an approving impression on the faculty and students in 1880. As the years continued on, gold and maroon have stayed as the U of M's school colors. The school songs for the U include: Minnesota Rouser, Minnesota March, Go Gopher Victory, Our Minnesota, Minnesota Fight, Hail! Minnesota, and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. The U of M's mascot, Goldy Gopher, is mascot to 23 varsity teams.

During the Minnesota Golden Gophers 2006-2007 academic year, their wrestling team won the NCAA national championship and the Big Ten team title, along with conference championships in men's golf, men's hockey, men's swimming and diving, women's indoor track and field and women's rowing.
