The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team is a member of the Big Ten Conference and boasts a roster of talented and dedicated football athletes. Although the Golden Gophers use the Hubert H. Humphrey Stadium for home games, construction is well underway on a state of the art, TCF Bank Stadium slated to open for the fall 2009 season. Loyal Gophers football fans eagerly anticipate the opening of TCF Bank Stadium while embracing the team's past success and rich history. It was over 100 years ago that the legacy of Minnesota Gophers football began with a 4-0 victory over Hamline University. It wasn't until 1890 that the Gophers first played rivals, the Wisconsin Badgers, and swept to a 63-0 win. 
Over the next decades, the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers built a solid team and rose to national prominence in 1960 with a sixth national championship. The following year, the Gophers secured their first and only Rose Bowl victory after defeated UCLA 21-3. After this success, the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers didn't stand out for many years. In 1999, the Golden Gophers football team finally won 8 games in a season and in 2003, the Gophers had their first 10 win season since 1905.
The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team and fans proudly wear the university's school colors of maroon and gold and cheer on their mascot, Goldy Gopher. Past head coaches include Jim Wacker (1992-1996) and Glen Mason (1997-2006). Current head coach, Tim Brewster, led the Golden Gophers football team to a 1-11-0 2007 season record. He is signed to a 5-year contract with the University of Minnesota and looks to build on the team's strengths for the upcoming 2008 season.
Former University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football stand-outs include Bruce Smith, a 1941 Heisman trophy award winner; Tyrone Carter, a 1999 Jim Thorpe Award Winner; and Dominique Barber, a member of the 2008 draft who now plays for the Houston Texans.
