The Florida Atlantic Owls football squad is a relatively new team, only beginning play in 2001.  Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger has led the team since its inception and oversaw the team's switch from NCAA Division I-AA to Division I-A and the Sun Belt Conference.  Although the team got off to a rocky start in its inaugural season (a 40-7 loss to Slippery Rock University), The Florida Atlantic Owls football team has gradually built a solid program and loyal fan base, who faithfully don the blue and red owls colors and proudly cheer on the burrowing owl football mascot.

The Florida Atlantic Owls football team plays in Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
