The Florida Atlantic Owls football squad is a relatively new team, only beginning play in 2001.  Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger has led the team since its inception and oversaw the team's switch from NCAA Division I-AA to Division I-A and the Sun Belt Conference.  Although the team got off to a rocky start in its inaugural season (a 40-7 loss to Slippery Rock University), The Florida Atlantic Owls football team has gradually built a solid program and loyal fan base, who faithfully don the blue and red owls colors and proudly cheer on the burrowing owl football mascot.

Due in part of the enthusiasm of their fans, the Florida Atlantic Owls football squad defeated the University of Minnesota on September 15, 2007.  This win was the Owls' football team's first victory over a Big Ten opponent with a final score of 42-39.  The Florida Atlantic Owls were propelled by this success and went on to become the Sun Belt Conference champions.  Additionally, the football team was invited to the 2007 New Orleans Bowl.  Due to this invitation, the Florida Atlantic Owls set an NCAA record by becoming the youngest program to receive such an invitation.  Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger was even recognized as Coach of the Year, a final nod to the overwhelming success of the Owls.

The Florida Atlantic Owls football team plays in Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  However, Coach Schnellenberger has always advocated the construction of a new stadium to house the Owls football team right on the main campus in Boca Raton.  In 2006, Coach Schnellenberger's vision for a new stadium was approved.  Plans are underway for an open-air, 30,000-seat football stadium what will fit with the university's mission of creating a sports-friendly arena in Boca's campus.
