The Big Ten Conference is the U.S.'s oldest Division I college athletic conference. Its eleven member institutions are located primarily in the Midwest, but stretch to Pennsylvania in the east as well. The conference competes in the NCAA's Division 1 and its football teams compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level of NCAA competition in that sport. Despite the conference's name, since Penn State joined in 1990, there have been 11 schools in the Big Ten. The University of Nebraska will join the conference as its 12th member effective July 1, 2011.
